About Kariwa ( pronounced     KA -  REE -  WA )
wpe52.jpg (2191 bytes)

The Chihuahua Breeding Prefix of Kariwa is named after the African name for Kariba.  Kariba is located in the Mashonaland West Province of Zimbabwe    Pam grew up in this area which has the largest man made lake in the world.   When the dam wall was built from 1955 the Batonga people were relocated to higher ground and the story of the Nyaminyami ( the River God) came about.   Kariba is in a natural reserve and wild game wonder the area: elephants, zebra, various species of buck, baboons, hippo, crocodiles, rhino's - just to name a few.....

. Having moved to Australia from Africa over four years ago, I started breeding Chihuahua's again.

KARIWA IS PRONOUNCED KA - REE - WA

The home of Kariwa Chihuahua is nestled amongst 7 beautiful parkland acres, teaming with wildlife, bird life and a lovely small dam stocked with Silver Perch and eels - YUK!!
This is where our breeding mums and dads have made their home.

At night time they all sleep inside the house whilst during the day they play with each other outside in the garden.  They have a wonderful verandah which is covered for shelter and insulated kennels . We go for walks on the beach and as I study from home I am with them 24 hours a day.

Our nursery is connected with an interleading door from the downstairs office.  The room has both gas and a reverse cycle airconditioner so all types of weather is accommodated.  Each nursing mum also has an orphan heat pad to keep the pups cosy - they are able to move onto the heated area when they want to and like wise move off. The mums generally start weening their puppies from about 6 weeks of age.  By this time the pups are making every effort to eat by themselves. Our puppies are given heaps of toys to assist them with their development (minor and motor co-ordination) and
I ofcourse am there all the time communicating and socialising with them.

At all times we are with the puppies and encourage lots of fun and human interaction.
.

The puppies are vaccinated and vet checked at 6 weeks of age.  Generally all being well they can be collected from me at 8 weeks of age.  If the puppy is to be airfreighted interstate then they will only leave when they are 10 - 15 weeks old and then this depends on their overall capability to travel. I urge new owners to attend puppy school when the puppy is fully vaccinated (generally 2 weeks after their second injection) but discuss it with your vet to make sure.  These puppy schools are so informative and can help you to train your dog in a manner that you will enjoy them for the rest of their lives.

My family of Chihuahua's get to share in the joys of nature at our home.  These pics are some of the frequent visitors to our garden - Kangaroo's, wild ducks, Kookaburras and many varieties of parrots.
